Danny Brown blew up the scene a couple years ago with his free album XXX. In fact, Spin named it hip hop album of year. Predictably his explicit songs are full of sex and drugs but don’t fit the mold of what you would expect from a Detroit rapper.

Since then, you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting a mixtape guest starring Danny Brown from Childish Gambino to El-P.

Most recently, there was some controversy last week when Danny Brown allegedly received oral sex on stage from a female fan “without his consent.”

Whether you are a long-time fan or just hearing his name, I would not miss his show tonight (Thursday, May 2) at The Orange Peel.

And I’m not saying you should do drugs before you come, but that seems like the thing that one would do if one was so inclined.

9pm, $17 at the door. Kitty opens the show.

Grandma has got to stop presenting shows or I’ll never get any work done ever again.

Tonight (Tuesday), Emily Easterly with her band and Thomas McNeely (Albert Adams, Date Night, That’s a Thing) in a rare solo format. Free at Jack of the Wood, but you should throw some bucks in the tip jar because these are both amazing musicians.

And tomorrow (Wednesday), the talented William Tyler with special guest Kovacs & the Polar Bear at Double Crown!

I can’t believe more people haven’t been talking about this show, but Ghostface Killah (you know, from Wu-Tang) is coming to Asheville Music Hall on May 17 backed by a 9 piece live band, Adrian Younge’s Venice Dawn. How is that not going to be awesome?

I left Double Crown on Wednesday night, er, Thursday morning with so much love.

I have love for Beach Day and Broncho. Both these bands were absolutely brilliant and different, but made a great bill. Beach Day gets you moving and then Broncho destroys you. I highly recommend checking them out in your town. I talking to you Brooklyn, Philly, Cincy, and Chicago.

I have love for Double Crown and Grandma. If you have not been to one of these shows, you have to come out. It’s a perfect small club, the kind of room where everyone in the room is your friend at the end of the night. The past few times I’ve been to here are the most fun I’ve had at shows in a while.

Next one is the incredible William Tyler with Kovacs & the Polar Bear on April 10th. Another Wednesday night and I’m okay with that.

Oh snap, All Go West presented by…Asheville Scene. I remember seeing the big Xpress banner on the main stage when the festival last happened two years ago.

The other big change is that the festival is moving even further west, from East West Asheville to Isis in West Asheville proper.

Mark your calendars: April 27. Or don’t, it’s a free country.

Lots of stuff going down tonight. I suggest you get your wilding in before St. Paddy’s day when all the amateurs come out to pretend they are still young.

One dude who is not young, but can out-rock you any day is Lance Wille. His new band, Impossible Vacation with Sarah Brown and Todd Weakly of Hope & Anchor, is playing at Toy Boat tonight with Des Ark (solo/electric). I don’t know anything else about them, but am excited to check them out. 10pm, 5 bucks, all ages.

Fun fact: Hope and Anchor (opening for Tyler Ramsey) was literally the first band I shot in town just 2 days after moving here.

Apothecary has also got something interesting happening tonight. Hemlock (Sam from Future Islands), Height (Dan Keech from Baltimore), and Olklore (Joel Herring from right here in Asheville) are doing a round-robin song swap. This might be acoustic or hip-hop or both. 10pm, all ages.

And lastly, Jaye Bartell (the artist formerly know as Pilgrim) is having a record release show for Elation at Harvest Records. Special guests Jason Seger and Emily Easterly will also be performing some “instrumental selections” and Nathanael Roney will be playing music and doing readings.

Speaking of Emily Easterly, she’s doing a solo set at French Broad Brewing tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm. Free.

Raucous nights are good for you. They remind you that you are not as old as you think, especially on a night when 2am magically becomes 3am.

I spent my days this weekend at Organic Growers School, which was amazing and rewarding but by night I happily washed the stink of peace and love off with bourbon and rock ‘n roll.

The Humms and The Vaygues tore up Double Crown on Saturday. Shows like this leave me with a different feeling of love. I love y’all for doing this shit. I want it. I need it. Thanks for obliging.

It’s also worth noting that this was the third Grandma Presents show I went this week. Check out his upcoming events . There is something for everyone.

Last night Grandma brought this traveling roadshow to the new-ish Isis Restaurant and Music Hall in West Asheville. The house was packed despite the frosty weather. He’s My Brother She’s My Sister and Paper Bird both put on fabulous performances, but Shakey Graves was my favorite. There is something about a one-man band that warms my heart, second only to a two-person band.

Last night was my second time at the Isis, but first time seeing a show there and it’s a wonderful venue. Bright lights and haze, everything a photographer could want (except a photo pit, but everyone was so polite). Anyway, if you haven’t been, I recommend checking out a show sometime soon.

Tonight (March 7th), New Belgium is having a Neighborhood Open House. Free and all ages.

Damn, two hip-hop giants on one night. Big Boi and Killer Mike, both Moogfest alums, will hit The Orange Peel on April 19th.

Regular tickets are $26 and go on sale this Friday (March 8) at noon. There is also some fancy schmancy VIP ticket for $75.
